nspiration – Cross‑Sell Block Above Reviews vs. Below Reviews: Test how content placement influences product discovery and conversions

Overview

Goal: Test how the placement of a cross-sell block (e.g., “You may also like” or “Frequently bought together”) influences engagement and conversions.

Build time: 5 minutes.

Expected impact: Potential uplift of 4–12% in product views and add-to-cart actions.

Hypothesis

The position of cross-sell content can affect how users interact with a product page. By moving the cross-sell block above versus below the reviews section, we can find the most effective point in the browsing journey to introduce related products and increase upsells.

Assumptions

  • Visibility Impact: Placing cross-sells above reviews increases visibility and interaction.
  • Engagement Flow: Showing recommendations after reviews may better capture users already engaged with the product.
  • Conversion Intent: Positioning aligns with user mindset—above reviews targets discovery, below reviews targets buying reinforcement.
  • Page Experience: Adding a dynamic block closer to high-traffic areas can improve average order value without disrupting the browsing experience.

Setting up the experiment in Personizely

To measure placement performance, create an A/B Experiment in Personizely using the Content Experiment type.

For detailed guidance, see the A/B Experiment tutorial →.

  1. Open Campaigns in your Personizely Dashboard and create a new Experiment.
  2. Choose your product page as the target location.
  3. Define two variations:
  • Original (Control): Display the cross-sell block below the reviews section.
  • Variation: Move the cross-sell block above the reviews section.
  1. Keep all design elements, CTAs, and product content identical between both versions to isolate placement as the variable.
  2. Set your primary goal to track key actions, such as Add to Cart, Purchase, or Product Clicks.
  3. Launch the campaign and let it run until both variants reach statistical significance.

You’re all set. This A/B experiment will help you discover whether highlighting product recommendations earlier in the product page increases cross-sell engagement and overall conversions.
